Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty
What is lower eyelid blepharoplasty surgery?
Lower eyelid blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure performed to rejuvenate the appearance of the lower eyelids by reducing under-eye bags, puffiness, wrinkles, and sagging skin. By addressing these problem areas, lower eyelid blepharoplasty can restore a more youthful and natural look to your lower eyelids.
For most patients, lower eyelid bags become more evident with age. With time, the tissues supporting the lower eyelids weaken, and the skin loses elasticity. This can lead to prolapse of lower eyelid fat, which results in undereye bags. As we age, we also lose fat and bone in our cheeks, which further intensifies the appearance of lower eyelid bags.
Some individuals may have a genetic predisposition to developing under-eye bags and dark circles at a younger age. Inherited traits, such as a tendency to retain fluid or a genetic predisposition to darker pigmentation under the eyes can contribute to the appearance of under-eye bags and dark circles. Lifestyle factors can also play a role.
Festoons are a second set of bags that accumulate underneath the eyelids, close to the top of the cheek, causing visible puffiness. They are usually due to a combination of factors, including skin laxity, muscle weakness, fat displacement, and fluid accumulation. Festoons have a significant impact on a person’s appearance, often making them look perpetually tired, aged, and swollen. Festoons are classically very difficult to treat, but they can sometimes be reduced during lower eyelid blepharoplasty surgery.
Dr. Moore will review your medical history and discuss your concerns and surgical goals. He will perform a thorough evaluation of the lower eyelids and determine if you are a good candidate for lower eyelid blepharoplasty. Men and women who desire to rejuvenate their appearance, reduce under-eye bags, puffiness, wrinkles, and sagging skin can benefit from lower eyelid blepharoplasty. If Dr. Moore determines you are a good candidate for surgery, he will review the risks and benefits of the procedure with you.
- Surgery creates a smoother more youthful appearance by removing or repositioning the excess fat that causes bulging or puffiness under the eyes.
- Lower eyelid blepharoplasty can make the eyes appear more refreshed, alert, and youthful. It can also contribute to a more balanced and harmonious facial appearance.
- If the lower eyelids are loose or drooping (eyelid laxity), lower blepharoplasty can address this issue by repositioning or tightening the underlying structures. This helps to restore proper support and function to the eyelid, and it also enhances the shape and appearance of the lower lids.
- While lower eyelid blepharoplasty primarily targets physical structures, it may indirectly improve the appearance of dark circles by reducing the shadowing caused by bulging fat.
- By addressing cosmetic concerns and rejuvenating the appearance of the lower eyelids, lower lid blepharoplasty can boost self-esteem and improve overall confidence.
