Lateral Brow Lift Procedure and Recovery
A lateral, or temporal brow lift, is a less invasive procedure designed to elevate the outer part of the eyebrow. It is often sought by patients with age-related changes to the area around the eye, notably excess hooding at the outer part of the upper eyelid.
This technique focuses on lifting the lateral (outer) brow and temple area, which can help open up the eyes and create a pleasing arch in the eyebrow for a more youthful appearance. It is particularly effective for individuals primarily concerned with sagging or drooping eyebrows at the sides of the forehead.
The lateral brow lift is almost always performed with upper eyelid blepharoplasty surgery. It can also be performed with other facial cosmetic surgeries, like a facelift, to achieve more comprehensive results.
Before surgery, a thorough medical evaluation is conducted to ensure the patient is a suitable candidate. This includes discussing medical history, current medications, and any previous surgeries. Patients may be advised to stop certain medications, such as blood thinners, and to refrain from smoking, which can impede the healing process. Dr. Moore will also discuss your aesthetic goals and expectations to determine the most appropriate approach.
- The procedure typically begins with the administration of intravenous sedation to ensure patient comfort.
- Approximately 2-inch-long incisions are made behind the hairline near the temples. Through the incisions, Dr. Moore lifts and repositions the tissues of the lateral brow and removes excess skin or scalp.
- When the desired position is achieved, the incisions are closed with sutures or surgical staples, and a sterile dressing is applied.
Recovery from a lateral brow lift varies but generally follows a predictable pattern.
- In the immediate postoperative period, patients are observed for approximately 1 hour after the surgery to ensure no immediate complications. Initial post-surgery effects include swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort, which are managed with pain medications and cold compresses.
- For the first few days after surgery, patients are advised to keep their heads elevated and avoid strenuous activities to reduce swelling. Mild bruising is expected. Ice packs and rest are essential to recovery. To prevent infection, ice should be applied to the incisions. Oral antibiotics may be prescribed.
- Sutures are removed within about seven days, and most patients can resume normal daily activities within a week.
- Most swelling and bruising usually resolves within one month. Full recovery and final results can take up to six months.
- Patients will receive specific instructions regarding wound care, bathing, and activity restrictions. It’s important to follow these guidelines to prevent complications and promote healing. Follow-up visits are scheduled to monitor the healing process and remove sutures or staples. During these visits, Dr. Moore will assess the healing process, address concerns, and provide additional care instructions.
A lateral or temporal brow lift is an effective and less invasive option for elevating the outer brow and temple area. Its benefits include minimal scarring, quicker recovery, and natural-looking, long-lasting results.
